Feeling Fat

Feeling especially fat today – wearing my size 8 jeans and they are tight. Ugh. Last night did not go so well diet-wise, hubby was in a bad mood so we ordered pizza and drank alcohol. I had 1 large glass of wine, 3 pieces of pizza with ham, pineapple and jalapenos (so tasty) and 1 chicken wing. I felt good that I didn’t drink more, but it was a very caloric meal and I did not work out**. And the scaled showed 140.2lbs this morning.

This morning I was feeling a bit more positive about dieting. If hubby gets on board I think I can do it. I didn’t get up very early this morning – it was about 7:20am when I finally crawled out of bed (and I went to bed rather early) so I didn’t do a full yoga session, I just did some stretching on my own before going for a run. The rain was holding off this morning so we ran outside: 3.4 miles in 30 minutes for an estimated 354 calories burned (I should always write “estimated” because that is all these tools can do – estimate. It is impossible to know the exact calorie burn)

I recorded yesterday’s Oprah – she had Michael Pollan on the show and talked about Food Inc. (which I must admit I have yet to watch). I never, ever watch Oprah, but the theme of food and what we eat really interests me. Its really sad how little people think about food and how obsessed with the cost of food people are.  Pollan brought out some interesting statistics, I really  liked this:

In 1960 we spent 18% (of GDP) on food and 9% on healthcare. Now we spend 8% on food and 17% on healthcare.

A good summary/thoughts on the episode: Queen of Lean and a transcript from another Micheal Pollan interview.

**Update: just calculated the calories for the pizza using Dominos website: 3 slices of hand tossed with ham, pineapple and jalapenos set me back 540 calories (9g fat, 96g carb, 21g protein). Yikes! Then add to that the wine, chicken wing and sauce (~200 for the wine, ~150 for the wing and sauce) and I consumed 890 calories last night! Wow, I should do the math more often, it really helps me put food in perspective. Suddenly my 3.4 mile run where I burned 350 calories doesn’t seem like much.

11:34am One more Pollan quote, this from NYTimes.com article:

There’s lots of money to be made selling fast food and then treating the diseases that fast food causes. One of the leading products of the American food industry has become patients for the American health care industry.
