Went to the gym today over the lunch hour – was planning on doing some yoga. As I stepped outside the sun felt so warm and nice I decided I would do yoga outside. So I went into the gym, which was freezing of course, changed, then walked around behind the building where there is an empty patio area (the building that my gym is in is mostly empty) laid down my mat and did 30 minute Yoga for Runners. I started out in the sun, but moved to the shade about half-way through – it was about 85 degrees after all. I think I would do yoga again outside – either there or by my office, although I might opt to wear shades

A friend made the statement this past weekend that “you burn more calories power-walking than running”. I vaguely remembered having heard similar claims, but doubting the validity of them. So, I challenged that calories burned is a matter of moving mass over distance, so whether you “power-walk” or run that distance you will burn basically the same amount of calories. Of course I also pointed out the exact number of calories will vary widely person by person, and even by fitness level of a particular person. For example, 2 years ago before I started running regularly I likely burned more calories per mile than I do now simply because my body is much more efficient at running.

A bit of searching online basically supports my line of thinking, although it isn’t quite that simple (it never is!). Here is a nice write up of running vs. walking. And a bit more info at thatsfit.com.

So, the bottom line is – get out there (or on a treadmill if the weather is bad) and get moving! It will burn calories, condition your cardiovascular system, and boost your mood (and possibly absorb some Vitamin D if the sun is shining). Do what feels good to you, but challenge yourself as well, and you will reap the benefits

Had a short run this morning: a bit over 2 miles in 21 minutes. Planning on doing yoga over lunch hour and a bit of lifting. Weight was 138.6 lbs. Breakfast – egg-white scramble (going to be lots of those for the next 2 weeks!)

Got up later than I wanted to this morning (7:00 am) but the sun was shining and it wasn’t too warm yet so I decided to do some biking then maybe run. I rode 5.5 miles, then ran 1.8 miles (for a grand total of 400 calories burned, woohoo). Weighed in at 138.8lbs this morning.

I would like to try riding my bike to work a few days a week to help train for the Iron Girl. I was thinking of trying on Friday, but hubby wants to do “the diet” hard for 2 weeks – starting tomorrow, so probably not the best time to try biking to work.

Over lunch I did the 20 minute Yoga Sculpt from yogadownload.com – I don’t think I will do that one again, it was just too slow for me, and I only have 8+ lbs weights at work, they just don’t work for it. And the sound is really strange – I think it is primarily a video that they pulled the audio out of.

Just ate a Dilly bar treat from DQ – now I feel sick .Since we are starting the diet tomorrow I thought it would be nice to have a treat, and Dilly bars have always been one of my favorite ice-cream treats. But now my stomach is killing me, ugh, not good…

Great run this morning – sun was shining, temperature was just right, the trails weren’t too wet. Morning weight: 137.6lbs, not bad. Still feeling thin, and not quite as bloated. Had a late, non-traditional breakfast after my run (about 9:45am when I finally ate) 2 pork tacos – yum.

Looking forward to trying a new workout tonight – my gym is starting to offer Zumba classes, tonight’s is free! We’ll see how I do; I tend to be rather un-coordinated when it comes to choreographed dance. And I am just clumsy in general, for example: last week I was the gym and went to grab a 25lb plate off one of the squat racks. I turn around quickly and bam! I hit my face just below my eye against one of the barbells on the rack. I iced the spot right away – it turned a little red but fortunately no bruising, just my ego, lol.

And, to make my “big workout day” complete I did a full-body strength training session this afternoon (took a late lunch). Didn’t follow a particular program, just did a good warm up, some body weight work, then hit all the major muscles (and the smaller too). New move I am loving: dumbbell pull-overs – really works the abs.

Just ordered some PB2 online, I have heard so many (mostly) great things about it I can’t wait to try it. Its basically powdered peanut butter. You mix it with water, so it has less fat and calories than regular peanut butter. Will post my thoughts once I try some.

Rainy day, no run today. Thought the rain might hold off for long enough that I could squeeze in a short run, but it was raining when I finally got up at 7:45am. Weight this am: 137.4lbs. This morning’s yoga: Hip Opening Flow 20 min. Great class, but I would recommend warming up with a sun salutation or 2 since she gets right into the hip work. Breakfast was egg-white scramble with turkey, spinach (sautéed up a big pile of spinach that was in the fridge for over a week, added half to breakfast, half with go with my zucchini lasagna for lunch), mushroom and red pepper. Hoping to go to Core Power Yoga today for noon class.

I wanted to open a bottle of wine last night to help soothe my tummy, but Hubby gently encouraged me not to. I am glad I didn’t – I don’t think it would have truly helped; in fact it might have made things worse. But, I did indulge a bit for dinner: small portion of zucchini lasagna, thick Greek yogurt with berries and walnuts (plus cinnamon, chia seeds and dried coconut – my new fav way to make yogurt), and then while watching Glee and Next Food Network Star I had 2 (yes, two!) plates of chips with cheddar and blue cheese – yum!

Stomach is feeling way better today (although it typically does feel OK in the mornings – mid day the pain and bloating starts up, ugh) actually feeling nice and thin – yay! Wearing size 6 jeans today – in the past few weeks these jeans have not made me happy, but feeling pretty good today. Time for a cup of green tea…

This past weekend was rough – my stomach was hurting all weekend and was really bloated. Friday night we did have a nice night – hit Uptown for happy hour, and walked the dog by the lake a little. But then my stomach started hurting, and it didn’t let up all weekend. Didn’t get nearly as much accomplished as I wanted, at least I got a facial, cleaned the house, made yogurt and cooked some food.

I have been keeping up with workouts, runs, cycling and yoga. Diet has been so-so. Alcohol intake has been high – a mojito just goes so well with grilling out, lol. I actually went a week or so without weighing myself, belive it or not. But I need to get back to tracking better – and updating this site!

I haven’t been posted as much lately – feeling rather blah. No particular reason, just blah. Anyway, had a good weekend, although it was not good from diet standpoint. Saturday night we were invited to a friend’s home for a barbeque, and of course there was tons of good food (and wine). I made my always yummy buffalo chicken dip, as well as coleslaw – one with cilantro, one without (some crazy people don’t like cilantro, go figure)

Today’s weight was 139.0lbs. Did 20 minute Yoga for Runners, followed by a 15 min run by the lake (yay for running). Hit the gym over noon hour – did the Action Hero workout again (cut it short a tiny bit) – that was really awesome. This morning I pulled some stuff out the freezer for lunch: gyro meat and baked quinoa, figured I would have it along with some salad, turned out pretty good:

Work up before the alarm this morning (6:40am), the sun was shining, it looked like a great day. I tried a new yoga program I downloaded – Yoga for Cyclists (20 minute). It was a good stretch for legs, but is meant to do after a ride, so not the best for first thing in the morning. It will be nice to do after a long bike ride. Scale said 139.2lbs this morning, not good. But Wednesday night was not good – I had a few too many mojitos and was suffering yesterday, and eating too much. But, after the yoga I decided to try going for a nice little run, and my leg didn’t hurt at all! Although now I am feeling some discomfort (just popped 3 ibuprofen – I hate doing that, but want to feel good to work out over noon hour) but that could be due to some new shoes I was trying on (going to return them – Kenneth Cole hates my feet).

Had a good workout over the lunch hour (and resisted co-worker’s invitation to Indian Palace buffet). Did my variation of the “Action Hero Workout” since I got my Valsides yesterday. It was a pretty tough workout, I was sweating through most of it. Here is what I did (I did each circuit twice):

Circuit #1

Single leg glute bridge — 12 / side
Valslide mountain climber — 20
Painful push away — To fatigue
Kayaker (or Sprinters) — 15 / side

Circuit #2

Lunge/kick — 12 / side
Bentover row — 12 X 40 lbs
Romanian dead lift — 12 X 40 lbs
Pullups or chest press — 15 X 20 lbs

Circuit #3

Bulgarian split squat — 12 X 10 lbs
Side plank shoulder press — 12 X 10 lbs
Valslide reverse lunge — 12 X 10 lbs
Pushups — To fatigue
Tricep pushdowns — 12 X 60 lbs
